News on the Renovation of MUSC Rutledge Tower

On target...So far!

Space shapes up for new residents of 9th and 10th floors, but occupancy will have to wait for spring.

We learned a lot when the occupants moved into floors 11 and 12. It is difficult, time consuming and expensive to get employees through the construction areas—not to mention their furniture, mail, phones, guests, supplies, computers and power. And adjusting manpower to accommodate all those things n the project schedule.

We also figured out that it would be much more difficult if we added patients to the mix, like we'd need to do if the clinics moved into floors nine and 10 right away. The big problem is elevators. Four of the building's eight elevators are undergoing electrical re-fitting, and the new one is still under construction. That leaves two working elevators for construction needs and one for employees of the 11th and 12th floors. There's simply no way to transport patients to the clinics.

That's why occupation has to wait—probably until late spring. Even so, it seems like a good time to introduce the “Package 2A” clinics (floors nine and 10).

Ninth Floor, Neuroscience Clinics

The ninth floor includes the neurology and neurosurgery clinics, physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R), pain management and EMG (electromyography). By organizing these services together a lot of good things happen:

  • Convenience—Stroke patients can come in for a progress evaluation, then head down the hall for their PM&R appointments. If a treatment plan includes physical therapy or occupational therapy, this facility is nearby—it's on the second floor, on the Ashley Avenue side of the building.
  • Consults—If a neurosurgeon or neurologist needs a pain management consult, the clinic is only a few steps away. This also makes interdisciplinary collaboration easier because clinics addressing related medical conditions can be scheduled concurrently.
  • Cross-Coverage—Staff members in these clinics are familiar with each other, and they often deal with patients who have overlapping medical conditions. Having them grouped makes cross-coverage simpler, and it makes things less confusing for patients who need to go from one service to another.

Tenth Floor, Maxillofacial/Dermatology Services

This floor is also full of clinics that often find themselves working together:

  • Maxillofacial Prosthodontics—Clinic director Betsy Davis, DMD, MS, and her staff custom-design and produce prostheses needed in facial reconstructive surgeries. In addition they handle patients needing dental implants. Her rapidly growing clinic is one of only a handful in the country with such comprehensive capabilities.
  • Facial, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery— This clinic works with ENT surgery, oncology, maxillofacial prosthodontics, dermatology, dermatology/oncology and other services to handle a wide range of facial reconstructive procedures. These complex cases may require a team approach that includes clinicians from other 10th floor clinics.
  • Dermatology & Dermatology/Oncology Clinics—Dermatology faculty and clinical staff provide the latest in diagnostic techniques and therapy for patients with diseases of the hair, skin and nails. Offered in this outpatient setting are many specialized services including phototherapy, photochemotherapy, Mohs micrographic surgery, cosmetic dermatologic surgery, laser surgery and immunodermatology.
