Council enriches campus life with events

The holiday decorations have been put away, and the New Year’s confetti has been swept aside. It’s time once again to settle back into a daily routine.

But don’t dismay—the fun doesn’t have to end with the holiday season. A series of events sponsored by MUSC’s Cultural Projects Council promises to add spice to campus life in 1998.

The Cultural Projects Council has been bringing arts and culture events to MUSC since its inception in 1984. Its mission—to promote the development of a well-rounded university student and enrich the lives of MUSC faculty staff and alumni—is fulfilled each year with events like the Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s concert in the Horseshoe and St. Luke’s Concert and Dessert Receptions.

Cultural Projects Council events for 1998 begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, with a St. Luke’s Concert and Dessert Reception with The Washingtons. This special performance for Black History Month will feature 18th century plantation work songs.

From noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, celebrate Fat Tuesday in the horseshoe with music by Shrimp City Slim and food from local restaurants.

MUSC artists and photographers have from Monday, Feb. 16, to Friday, Feb. 20, to submit their work for display in the Art/Photo Exhibit to be held Tuesday, March 10, to Friday, April 30, at the Courtenay Gallery in the MUSC Harper Student Center. The Art/Photo Exhibit Reception at Courtenay Gallery will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, and is open to the public. Student Programs director Robin Hardin said, “It’s a great showcase for the creativity and talent of the MUSC community.”

From Saturday, March 21, to Friday, March 28, International Week will feature a variety of activities celebrating cultures around the world. And at 8 p.m. Friday, March 27, a St. Luke’s Concert and Dessert Reception brings Nightingale, a three-member French Canadian contra dance band to MUSC. With a fiddle, accordion, piano, guitar and foot percussion, Nightingale offers a unique blend of northern tunes from Quebec, Ireland, France, Scandinavia and Newfoundland.

Cultural Projects Council events are funded by the Alumni Association, the President’s Office, the MUSC Student Government Association and the Health Sciences Foundation.
