Alma mater recognizes Markwald

Roger R. Markwald, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, was recognized recently by the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, as the 1997 College of Science Distinguished Alumnus. 

"This honor gives us the opportunity to acknowledge your early education at Cal Poly Pomona as a Biological Sciences Department major and your subsequent outstanding achievements as a scientist and educator," wrote Cal Poly Pomona College of Science dean Simon J. Bernau. 

University president Bob H. Suzuki wrote, "You are now among an elite group of alumni being recognized for your success through your professional endeavors and community service. I applaud you on your success and commend you on your outstanding contributions, both in your professional and in your personal lives." 

Following his undergraduate work, Markwald went on to receive his Ph.D. in 1969 from Colorado State University. After doing his post-doctoral training at MUSC, he remained and became an assistant professor of anatomy in 1970. In 1977, Markwald moved to Texas Tech Health Sciences Center's Department of Anatomy, and he became a full professor there in 1982. From there he moved to Wisconsin, where he was chairman from 1984-1992. In 1992, Markwald returned to South Carolina to become chairman of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at MUSC. 

He was president of the American Association of Anatomists from 1988 to 1989 and is the incoming president of the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Neurobiology Chairpersons. His lasting research achievements have been in the area of development cardiology and limb development.
