March is designated as National Nutrition Month

At MUSC, the registered dietitians and dietetic interns have a primary responsibility to take an active role in patient care.

As nutrition professionals, they also have a responsibility to educate the public in an understandable, meaningful way. March has been established as a specific time of year to do just that. Annually sponsored by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), National Nutrition Month (NNM) is the vehicle for achieving two objectives: convey basic nutrition knowledge necessary to make informed food choices and develop healthy eating habits and to promote the ADA and it's members as the most reliable, credible source of current, scientifically founded nutrition information.

As such a success, NNM is in its 25th year of production. The 1998 slogan is “Make Nutrition Come Alive. It's All About You!” The design of the program is to emphasize the necessity of good nutrition as a vital part of a healthy lifestyle and personal responsibility for food habits. Translation: it's a call to action!

Under the supervision of Mary Basel, clinical nutrition manager, the Dietetic Internship Class of 1997-98 has organized the promotions and activities of NNM.

Keep your eyes open for the following: a nutrition related article published weekly in The Catalyst; a bulletin board filled with information you can use; table tents in the cafeteria; weekly flyers posted throughout the hospital; daily nutrition messages posted on the e-mail; and Catalyst Online web site <http://www.musc.edu/catalyst/>.

Be careful...you might just learn something about nutrition.
