Community awards nominations accepted

The Office of the Provost is accepting nominations from MUSC students, faculty, and staff for the newly announced Community Commendation Awards.

These awards are intended to recognize members of the community at large whose involvement and contributions have been instrumental to the success of the university’s community outreach efforts in the areas of health care, education, and research. Such efforts include programs and activities that bring together members of the community and the university to address community health needs while providing learning and research opportunities for students, faculty, and community residents.

“MUSC students, faculty, and staff have come to recognize the tremendous value of moving traditional on-campus health care, education, and research programs into the communities they serve,” said MUSC provost, Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D. “The success of such programs often is a direct result of the efforts of community members who champion and become involved in them. Each of these community leaders is a hero and we are proud to honor their essential contributions.”

Nominators must submit a formal letter of nomination. The letter should include the nominee’s full name and mailing address, and should describe the nominee’s contributions to the university. The letter should provide specific information about how the nominee’s contributions have enhanced the efforts of MUSC’s community outreach programs and activities in the areas of community service, health care, education, and/or research.

Nominations are due in the Office of the Provost by 5 p.m., Friday, May 22. All nominations should be submitted to Marcia Higaki, room 200G Administration Building (792-1928). A broad-based review panel of faculty, staff, and students has been formed to consider nominees and select awardees this first year. In future years, the panel will also include two previous recipients of the award, and panel membership will be rotated. First-year awardees will be announced no later than June 26. Awardees will receive a recognition plaque, and a reception will be held to publicly recognize and honor their outstanding contributions to the Medical University.
