April 16, 1998

As our system of services grows and the market evolves, we are finding the need to make organizational change to maximize use of resources. A decision has been reached recently by leaders of the MUSC clinical enterprise to create a “Children’s Healthcare System” to improve the integration of children’s services throughout the MUSC clinical enterprise. This organizational change will involve the reassignment of responsibilities of the Medical Center administrative team.

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Tom Keating has been appointed administrator for MUSC’s Children’s Healthcare System. He has served as the MUSC Medical Center administrator for Finance and Support Services since 1994 and has been employed in various administrative roles with MUSC since 1984.

Mr. Keating’s organizational skills, breadth of knowledge concerning the healthcare industry and his experience at MUSC make him an ideal match for this challenging new assignment. Mr. Keating’s new assignment will include working with the leadership of the College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, hospital, UMA Ambulatory Care and Carolina Family Care for development and implementation of a unified children’s services delivery system throughout the clinical enterprise. He will co-chair an operations committee responsible for oversight of the Children’s Healthcare System. Mr. Keating also will maintain his current responsibilities for directing various support activities. His financial management responsibilities will be reassigned to enable him to focus his energies upon the Children’s Healthcare System.

Ms. Lisa Montgomery, who has been employed with MUSC since 1991 and who in recent years has served as the hospital controller and director of Patient Financial Services, will be assigned additional responsibilities and assume the title of administrator for Financial Services. She will continue to serve as the chief compliance officer and assume overall responsibility for direction of the Medical Center’s health information services, patient financial services, finance, and managed care. Ms. Montgomery has been highly successful in directing patient financial services at MUSC Medical Center and brings to her new role extensive experience in hospital management. As a result of these new assignments and organizational changes, we plan to establish and recruit for a new position to direct patient financial services.

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Keating and Ms. Montgomery.

W. Stuart Smith Interim Vice President for Clinical Operations Interim CEO, MUSC Medical Center

Announcement

  • Lisa Montgomery, administrator for Financial Services, announced that Reece Smith has been named compliance program manager. Smith’s responsibilities include keeping abreast of federal compliance issues, providing support for development and implementation of our overall compliance plan, conducting compliance training and assisting departments with preparation of systematic processes to monitor compliance issues.

Compliance Update

  • Managers are reminded that the initial compliance policy training sessions should be completed by May 1. Employees and their managers or supervisors should sign the form provided for recording training for each person in the unit or department personnel files. Employee rosters by cost center with notations indicating completed training for all employees (or explanatory comments for employees on leave, etc.) should be sent to the Compliance Office, Room 205, MUH.
  • The procedure for reporting suspected violations encourages reporting through normal administrative channels or through the Compliance Hotline (1-888-398-2633), by e-mail (COMPLIANCE), in campus mail (Room 205, MUH), or to a Medical Center compliance officer.

MUSC Makes Its Mark Known

  • At the April 14 communications meeting, Chris Murray, director of Marketing Services, announced the official rollout of MUSC’s new image for its clinical system. The new image will serve as the logo for the entire clinical system. (The university’s seal will remain to represent academic and research areas.)
  • Murray explained to the management team the process used to determine how best to represent MUSC in the community. Information from a recent Gallup poll, from focus groups and from other sources revealed a lack of “brand recognition” of MUSC’s services among consumers in the Charleston area. Considering all the choices consumers have for health care in today’s market, the importance of high recognition of a single image for the MUSC clinical system cannot be overstated.
  • After a short video reinforcing the change and how it will affect departments, a graphic standards manual was distributed to members of the management team. This manual, which explains in detail the logo and its variations, is available from Marketing Services. Call 792-7499 to request a copy.
  • The period between now and Sept. 30, has been designated as a transition period for removing old logos from letterhead, business cards and items such as brochures. University Press is following the new graphic standards for all orders.
  • Questions about how to use the new logo can be directed to the MUSC Communications Council. Call extension 2-7499 for help.
