Distinguished alumni named

Recipients of the 1998 Distinguished Alumni Awards, presented by the MUSC Medical Alumni Association, were Drs. Arthur V. Williams, Jr., ‘43, and Carol S. Nichols, ‘72. The awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to the medical profession, the community and MUSC, are given each year at the luncheon and business meeting of the alumni association, held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) in Charleston.

Williams completed postgraduate training at Milwaukee County General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Milwaukee and Marquette University Medical School in Marquette, Michigan. From 1950 until 1966, he practiced internal medicine with a special interest in cardiovascular-renal disease; and during his career he served on the faculties of Marquette and MUSC and on the staffs of the Charleston VA Medical Center and Charleston County Memorial Hospital. For nearly 20 years, he served as director of the Division of Nephrology at MUSC; and for 23 years he was chief of the MUSC dialysis unit. A longtime supporter of MUSC, he is a Fellow in the Health Sciences Foundation’s Society of 1824.

A member of a number of professional organizations and committees, he is the author or co-author of a number of articles, presentations and abstracts.

He is a resident of Charleston, and he and his wife have three children. His citation was read by Dr. Peter C. Gazes, ‘44.

Nichols has practiced neurology in Spartanburg since 1978. Prior to that, she completed internal medicine and neurology residencies at MUSC and practiced for a year as a civilian at Barksdale Air Force, LA Hospital. She has held a number of offices with national, state and county professional societies and served as 1996-97 president of the SCMA, the first woman to lead the group.

Her husband, Dr. John T. Nichols, is also a 1972 College of Medicine graduate; and they have two daughters. Her citation was read by Dr. Marc Newberry.
