Path residents dominate national meetings

Pathology residents at MUSC have been "dominating" the national pathology meetings with presentations lately, said Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's Kim A. Collins, M.D.

She said that while many residents across the country try to get their work accepted to the national and international meetings, only a small percentage actually do. The numbers from MUSC are very high.

"I guess I sound proud," Collins said. "Our residents are extremely active and hold national offices. There is so much more to a residency than just learning the science of pathology, Collins said. "We need to teach our residents not only how to read the literature, but how to write it."

Collins, a forensic pathologist at MUSC, has taken a special interest in the development of research among pathology residents. "As physicians, we're responsible for our profession and its growth."

She said that residents need to learn to research and also retrospectively look at medicine. Once they have a project idea, they need to follow it through and defend it at national meetings of their peers. "That makes MUSC look super and teaches the residents so much."

Here's a look at what MUSC residents have been doing, representing the Department of Pathology here at home and away at national meetings:
