Public Safety develops hot new website

by Cindy A. Abole, Public Relations

Want to know how to locate a lost pair of glasses or backpack, obtain a new identification card, or learn more about the campus victims assistance program? MUSC employees and students can just point and click directly to the Department of Public Safety’s new website.

Sgt. Terry Howell, Public Safety’s bicycle training officer, teamed with Regina Hall, communications coordinator, Department of Finance and Administration, to provide guidance and direction in creating the new Department of Public Safety home page. Hall is the liaison linking related components under this division to create and update existing websites such as Human Resources Management, Parking Transportation and Continuous Quality Improvement.

Six months in the making, Hall worked cooperatively with Howell and Public Safety staff to coordinate and initiate communication between divisions to remain consistent with MUSC’s main website.

“The services we provide on campus are the same for everyone whether it's a lost identification card or responding to a request for a safety escort,” Hall said. “Overall, everyone benefits.”

The website highlights the Campus Law Enforcement’s mission statement, services, member organization, employment information, history, contact address and phone numbers, department initiatives, plus other law enforcement links.

Under the link for services, a screen displays 14 categories offering further information. For example, “lost and found property” describes Public Safety’s procedure for submitting and recovering lost articles. Items are held for usually 90 days.

“The website provides MUSC personnel with a valuable method for communication and education, as regards to public safety issues,” said Chief Charles Wiley. “I’m hoping our webpage will provide valuable information for students, faculty staff, students and patients as our customers. More importantly, it helps us provide the necessary service, and promotes community involvement.”

The page dedicated to “department initiatives” highlights continuous programs and issues on the department’s current agenda. For example the status of the department’s accreditation process through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) and the issue regarding new uniforms for law enforcement personnel are two items listed on the website.

The department hosts a complement of 75 officers and employees on MUSC’s campus. Another staff of 50 people provide safety and security at the College of Charleston. Visitors can access the Public Safety website at <http://www.musc.edu/publicsafety/index.htm>.
