TIMELINE

Up and Running! On Time, On Budget, On We Go!

It took more than 18 months and 750,000 man-hours of work to com plete, but the result is magnificent: the area's largest, most comprehensive ambulatory care center, built to deliver high-quality, compassionate, patient-friendly services to generations of Lowcountry families.

As James B. Edwards, DMD, president, MUSC, pointed out in his remarks at the grand opening on July 22, MUSC Rutledge Tower occupies a location that has served the area's health care needs for more than a century. The Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy Religious Community opened St. Francis Xavier Infirmary in 1882, and the Rutledge/Calhoun corner has been a health care Mecca ever since. MUSC Rutledge Tower will carry on that tradition with dozens of modern clinics staffed by more than 400 health professionals using technologies the Sisters of Charity could never have imagined.

Still more to go

Despite the ceremonies and move-in frenzy, there are still hurdles to be overcome. As this Time line newsletter is being written, we've just passed the DHEC licensure procedure for outpatient and support services (finished July 28), and we're preparing for the procedure covering the operating rooms, OT/PT and the Digestive Disease Center.

Move-in activities follow right on the heels of these inspections, and if all goes according to plan, the entire facility will be up and running as you read this.

A hearty note of thanks

Whether you're booting up your clinic computer system for the first time, hurrying down the connector to your first Rutledge Tower clinic appointment, or just passing by the building, we hope you'll take a moment to think about all the people who worked together to make this remarkable facility possible.

It's hard to imagine all the obstacles—large and small—that popped up, and all the cooperative effort it took to overcome them. In the eight previous issues of TimeLine we tried to introduce you to some of the planners, committee members, construction supervisors and administrative people who made it happen, and as a final gesture of appreciation, we've mentioned them again below.

Everyone involved—from the project teams to those who operate the clinics and offices—deserve a sincere Thank You! For all your patience, cooperative effort, creativity and dedication. As this facility enters its next century of service, it will stand as a testimony to our ability to work together toward a common goal of excellence.

A Thousand Thanks
