Model clinic for victims of rape implemented at MUSC

A model program to make the post-rape forensic and medical exam given to all rape victims less anxiety provoking and more standardized is being implemented at MUSC. The primary aim of this program is to improve care and service to victims of rape in the tri-county area, while at the same time maximizing effective evidence collection for prosecution of rapists.

Balancing the needs of victims with the needs of law enforcement presents unique problems to service providers. However, the corps of volunteer nurses that make up MUSC’s sexual assault team have been tremendously successful in providing caring, sensitive, and supportive care to victims during the project.

The Sexual Assault Clinic are still recruiting nurses to perform post-rape forensic exams. To maintain state of the art forensic procedures, a Sexual Assault Examiner workshop will be offered on Aug. 21, 22, and 23. Course hours and content will count toward Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification for interested nurses, and continuing education credits may also be arranged.

This workshop is open to all nurses and physicians interested in participating in MUSC’s post-rape forensic exam project. The majority of costs associated with this workshop will be paid for by current project funds, and only a nominal fee of a $20 will be charged to attendees.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the Sexual Assault Team and/or attending the workshop, call Faye Leboeuf at (843) 792-9891 (leave name, number, and home address on voice-mail).
