Concert to raise funds for breast cancer

On Saturday, Oct. 10 join local favorites— Dayroom, She Says and Simple Green—at Cumberland’s (26 Cumberland Street) for the second annual Rock for the CureTM —an event to benefit the Charleston, SC Race for the Cure® and the fight against breast cancer in South Carolina.

For the members of She Says and Dayroom, raising awareness about breast cancer and promoting early detection is critical. “In this past year, She Says members have lost friends and family members to this pervasive disease. We dedicate our performance to the memories of those we have lost and with hopes for a bright future for others who are winning the battle,” a member said.

Tickets are available at the door. Admission to Rock for the CureTM is $5 for those 21 and older and $8 for those ages 18 to 20. The show starts at 9 p.m. Seventy-five percent of funds raised through Rock for the CureTM and the Race for the Cure® remain in South Carolina, supporting local breast cancer education and screening projects for the medically underserved. The remaining 25 percent helps fund the Komen Foundation’s National Grant Program.

Breast cancer is the leading killer of women ages 35 to 54. In 1998, it is estimated that more than 178,700 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (one every three minutes), and more than 43,500 will die (one every 12 minutes). Early detection is a woman’s best defense. Women should perform monthly breast self-exams starting by age 20, and begin having mammograms annually at age 40.

The fifth annual Race for the Cure® will be held in Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 17. For more information on Rock for the Cure or the race, call (843)792-9186 or check the race web page at <http://hcc.musc.edu/race4cure>.
