IOP to offer free screenings and seminar for depression

Each year, more than 17 million Americans are diagnosed with depression. Fewer than half that number seek treatment. Oct. 8 is National Depression Screening Day. MUSC's Institute of Psychiatry (IOP) will offer individuals a free screening for signs and symptoms of depression. Common symptoms of depression include feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, restlessness and irritability, changes in sleep and appetite, loss of energy and thoughts of death or suicide. Participants for the screening will view a brief video, complete an anonymous written screening test and have the opportunity to discuss results with a mental health professional. Drop in screenings will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at the IOP, located on the corner of President and Doughty streets. For more information on the screening, call 792-0068. Participates are also invited to the free Mind Your Health Seminar, “Digging Out of the Hole of Depression,” presented by Michele T. Laraia, R.N., Ph.D., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the MUSC IOP Auditorium. To register, call 792-1414.
