IOP's 5K run, walk to be held

The MUSC Institute of Psychiatry's fourth Up and Running 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 24.

Hugh Myrick M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and Mike Loggins, owner of the Extra Mile, are race co-directors. Myrick predicts this year's course to be “flat, fast and scenic and will include a unique five-member team competition.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit substance abuse education, he said.

The race, which will be held in conjunction with the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Institute of Psychiatry, is open to everyone, not just to MUSC employees.

It will start at the MUSC campus, go up Rutledge Avenue., continue through Charleston's historic battery, down Ashley Avenue. and will finish at the steps of the Institute of Psychiatry on President Street. The course is TAC certified. Overall awards will be presented to the top three men and women and first master (over 40) man or woman. Age group awards for the top man and woman in 13 age groups will be presented. The race will also have specialty awards for MUSC employees, students and faculty.

The early registration fee is $12 and includes a T-shirt. Early registrations must be received by Oct. 15. After Oct. 15, the registration fee is $15.

Race packets and T-shirts may be picked up in advance in the lobby of the Institute of Psychiatry, corner of President and Doughty streets on Friday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or on the day of the race in front of the MUSC Library/Administration Building from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. T-shirts will be available while supplies last on the day of the race.
