May 4 is National Childhood Depression Awareness Day

Children are one-third of our population and all of our future. This quote helps define America's value in today's youth.

For as many as three million children, depression is a painful, daily reality.

National Childhood Depression Awareness Day is May 4. The Youth Services Division of the Institute of Psychiatry (IOP) is working along with the National Mental Health Association and other national organizations to increase public awareness.

“By knowing the signs and symptoms, parents and teachers can save children from the feelings of despair and helplessness that accompany depression,” said Lisa Hand, M.D., chief, Child and Adolescent Services at the IOP. “On May 4, we can offer families hope. Depression is treatable and with help, our kids can have a brighter future.”

Sponsored annually by the National Mental Health Association and other national organizations, Childhood Depression Awareness Day-also known as Green Ribbon Day- seeks to increase public awareness of the reality of childhood depression.
