Pharmacoeconomics, health care researcher joins pharmacy faculty

Kit N. Simpson, Dr.PH, recently joined the College of Pharmacy faculty in October as professor of pharmacy practice in the area of pharmacoec-onomics and as an investigator at the Center for Health Care Research.

Prior to joining MUSC, Simpson was “on loan” to industry from the Department of Health Policy and Administration at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Public Health, where she served on the faculty since 1985. During her 18-month stint in industry, she was director of clinical economics research for Chiron, a large biotechnology company with headquarters in the San Francisco Bay area.

Simpson has broad experience in medical care research both in the United States and Europe. She received her undergraduate education in Denmark, and MPH (in management) and the Doctor of Public Health in Health Services Research from UNC. She was a Robert Wood Johnson Faculty Fellow in Health Care Finance at Johns Hopkins University in 1992, studying outcomes research and economic modeling methods.

Simpson has published more than 75 articles, reports or book chapters related to the assessment of evidence for cost and effectiveness of medical interventions and public health policies.

Her research interests include the use of multivariate exposure models for economic analysis; application of Markov and Monte Carlos simulations in HIV and cancer research; and the use of archival data for determining reimbursement policy for complex and costly conditions. Her current research applies these methods to the evaluation of outcomes and cost of care for antiretroviral therapies for AIDS, education and testing of patients with diabetes, screening for colon cancer, and therapies for the prevention of respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants.
