Storm Eye Institute to offer free

diabetic retinopathy screening

The MUSC Storm Eye Institute will offer a free diabetic retinopathy screening Nov. 18. To make an appointment, call the MUSC Health Connection at 792-1414.

The Storm Eye Institute urges all people with diabetes to get a dilated eye exam at least once a year. There are no early warning signs and symptoms of diabetic eye disease.

People do not realize that their eyesight is slowly deteriorating. And because there are no symptoms or noticeable changes in vision, people with diabetes might not make it a health priority to visit an eye care professional.

But it is estimated that half of the nation’s estimated 16 million people with diabetes will develop some degree of diabetic retinopathy, the most common form of diabetic eye disease.  This type of visual loss is often preventable, and the first preventive step is a dilated eye exam.

A free brochure, Don't Lose Sight of Diabetic Eye Disease, is available by calling Carolyn Cavanaugh at 792-4735 or by writing to Diabetic Eye Disease, 2020 Vision Place, Bethesda, MD, 20892-3655.
