Congratulations to Lynn Bond, R.N., PACU, for being selected as the A.R.E.A./APPLAUSE employee of the year, and to the quarterly A.R.E.A./APPLAUSE winners. Also, I want to express my gratitude to Marc Williams, manager of Clinical Neurophysiology Services and chair of the A.R.E.A./APPLAUSE Awards Committee, and the committee members for their exceptional work, reviewing all APPLAUSE cards and selecting winners. Additional information about the winners is highlighted below.

As communicated in previous newsletters, in addition to our goal of implementing the Medical Center Authority, the Medical Center's tactical priorities include: reducing cost of care, customer service, medical staff involvement, information-based decision-making and management effectiveness.  Work teams will develop specific objectives for accomplishing these priorities.

All of our tactical priorities are important. However, when we communicate our performance improvement plan "motto," we will emphasize customer service and reducing cost of care. These two broad-based priorities are well understood and appreciated, and will be represented by "C²."

Vice President for Clinical Operations and
Executive Director, MUSC Medical Center

Medical Center employees recognized through APPLAUSE award
Award Winners

  • Marc Williams presented the A.R.E.A./APPLAUSE awards for the third and fourth quarters of 1999. The following people received a plaque and a gift certificate. Their names will be added to a plaque outside the cafeteria.
Third Quarter A.R.E.A. Award Winners
Kay Lucas, R.N., NNICU
A visitor who brought her fourth-grade church class to the NNICU with gifts of quilts for the babies applauded Lucas for staying after her shift to answer all of the children's questions with humor and patience.

Karri Malvasio, Patient Care Assistant, 6 East
A patient applauded Malvasio for bringing her clothes, and doing her hair and nails for her after work hours. The patient said Malvasio was a special caregiver, because she saw her do this for other patients, as well.

Fourth Quarter A.R.E.A. Award Winners
Ron Butler, Clinical Associate, ACU
A patient and MUSC staff applauded Butler for volunteering to drive to the patient's home and bring him in for surgery when the patient was not able to get a ride.

Amy Gibson, R.N., 10 West
A woman whose husband had been at MUSC for more than eight months applauded Gibson for taking action when needed on at least two occasions to get the patient properly assessed and treated to save his life.

Fourth Quarter A.R.E.A. Award and Employee of the Year Winner
Linda (Lynn) Bond, R.N., PACU
MUSC staff, a pediatric patient and the patient's family applauded Bond for opening her home to them and providing them a place to stay when necessary since early summer. The patient lives a few hours from MUSC and needs to be treated every two to three weeks for an obstructed airway. The family calls Bond a lifesaver.

HeRMIT System

  • Kim Duncan, manager of Human Resources Information Systems, reviewed the new Human Resources Management Information Technology (HeRMIT) payroll system at MUSC.  Beginning Dec. 14, the HeRMIT system will produce all biweekly paychecks and direct deposits.  Monthly employees will receive their first HeRMIT checks or direct deposits on Dec. 31.  The new paychecks will look very similar to the old ones.
  • The STAR system will not change as a result of the HeRMIT conversion.
  • The first check employees receive from the HeRMIT system in December will include rate changes for benefits that take effect in 2000.  If you notice a difference in your pay, be sure to check for benefits changes first.
  • If you have a question about your paycheck, contact your supervisor or business manager. If questions remain, call 792-2191 or visit one of the following locations between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 and 15: University Human Resources Service Center— Harborview, room 105; Medical Center Human Resources Office—109 Children's Hospital; College of Nursing—room 520
