Keefe elected director of nursing honor society

The board of directors of Sigma Theta Tau International has announced that Maureen R. Keefe, R.N., Ph.D., is one of three elected directors of Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing. She was installed during the society’s biennial convention in San Diego, Calif., and will serve a four-year term.

Keefe is dean and professor of the College of  Nursing. She is a past chair of the Western Institute of Nursing/Western Society for Research in Nursing and a member of the board of directors of the South Carolina League for Nursing, Johnson and Johnson Pediatric Institute Advisory Board, and YWCA-Charleston.

A member of Gamma Omicron chapter, she was a member of the society’s Finance Committee, Dean’s Task Force and Distinguished Lecturer Subcommittee. She was the chair of the International Research Committee and served on the Perinatal Grant Selection Subcommittee for Mead Johnson and the society. In addition, she is a past president of Alpha Kappa chapter.

“The leadership of the society’s new officers will include a focus on honoring our past, continuing the missions related to our purposes and planning our future,” said Patricia E. Thompson, R.N.,Ed.D., president of Sigma Theta Tau.

The board consists of 11 elected members and the society’s executive officer. The board of director’s focus is on goal-setting, planning, policy development, resource development, corporate oversight, evaluation and decision-making.

Sigma Theta Tau International is a 77-year-old honor society with a quarter-million inducted members that is essentially the Phi Beta Kappa of nursing. Its mission is to improve the health of people worldwide by improving nursing scholarship. Members include practicing nurses, instructors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and others.
