StatLAN to retire after 10 years of service

In an article published in The Catalyst in June, the 10 years of service that StatLAN has performed at MUSC were recognized. With the end of StatLAN’s service now in sight, it is important to describe how and when the final stages of retirement will be accomplished.

The retirement plan outlined in June identified the following five major steps:

  • Identify all the computerized tasks that StatLAN performs
  • Develop conversion strategies for each StatLAN program
  • Deliver the converted programs to all locations served by StatLAN through the ClinLAN95 workstation.
  • Train the staff
  • Remove the StatLAN terminals
The first three of these steps are now complete. By early December, the remaining two steps will have been completed throughout the MUSC hospitals. For specific details about converted programs as well as a unit-by-unit timetable, please refer to the accompanying tables.

Frequently asked questions
StatLAN works pretty well so why is it being taken away?
The hardware on which StatLAN runs is not Y2K compliant. Also, the company that supports StatLAN (Oacis Healthcare Systems) is ceasing support on Jan. 31.

How do I learn more about Oacis?
There are two ways:

  • Sign up for a 3-hour comprehensive or 1-hour fast-track class. You can do this online by navigating to the CCIT home page <http://www.musc.edu/ccit> and then clicking on Training.
  • Access the online Oacis Computer Based Tutorial available on ClinLAN95 PCs. Look for the desktop icon called Learn Oacis.
I don’t have a ClinLAN95 account. Is this necessary?
No. Throughout the clinical units of the hospital there are many autolog PCs.  These PCs are readily identifiable by the autolog sticker on the monitor.  These PCs stay logged on most of the time. If you want to log on to one, simply type the autolog ID that is printed on the label of that PC. No password is required.

I am used to doing my census on StatLAN.  How will I do this in the future?
Census Management programs will now be available on Oacis. You will need an Oacis account to run these programs.  Staff on each unit will be taught how to do this through in-service training. A PowerPoint tutorial will also be available on ClinLAN95 to help answer your questions.

How do I get an Oacis account?
When you register for training, an account will be set up for you and will be available when you arrive in class. If you plan to learn Oacis through the Learn Oacis CBT, call 792-9700 and request an Oacis registration form. A form will be faxed to you. Complete the form, fax it back, and within 48 hours an ID will be issued to you. To pick up your ID make sure you have your MUSC badge and go to Children’s Hospital, room 109 (Human Resources). At all other times you can pick up your ID in Medical Records in the main hospital room 208.

We get Stat labs automatically printed on my unit.  Is this going away as well?
No. Stat labs will continue to print. The only difference is that the lab will print them from the Cerner system directly to the units through the EMR network.

I use the auxiliary calculations on StatLAN. Where will I find these now?
These functions are not changing but you will find them in a different place. They will either be found as a palette button on the Oacis login screen or they will be accessed through their own icon on your ClinLAN95 workstation.
