Employees receive AREA awards for job well done

AREA (Accountability, Respect, Excellence Applause) awards were given to employees who have gone above and beyond their job description and have demonstrated actions exemplary to the mission, visions and values of the Medical Center and Medical University.

Employees received a $50 gift certificate to either Citadel or Northwoods mall. The AREA award recipients are: 
 

  • Jennifer Bailey, Ob/Gyn: Bailey was recognized for diffusing a volatile patient care situation in an exam room. A patient wanted to leave against medical advice and Bailey calmly talked the patient and her husband into staying for observation. 
  • Thomas Byrd, Public Safety: Byrd ssisted a woman with car trouble after he was relieved from duty.  This was done during one of the days when the temperature was in excess of 100 degrees. Byrd also remained to help after Charleston City Policy arrived.  He demonstrated first hand his dedication to the Medical University of South Carolina and the Department of Public Safety.
  • Leslie Harrelson, Experimental Pathology: Harrelson was applauded for being a ‘supermom,’ make-up/costume artist, chauffeur, food expert, counselor, film critic, and friend to all. Thank you for your constant support of MUSC’s Cookin’ Kids Show and for going the ‘extra mile’ to make the show a success. 
  • Timothy Hushion, General Clinical Research Center: Hushion was acknowledged by a patient and family for “taking extra special care of our family during our hospital stay. Tim went above and beyond what he had to do. He was courteous and helpful the whole stay. Tim is a wonderful asset to your hospital.”
  • Ericka Taylor, Radiation Safety: Taylor was recognized for taking on added duties and responsibilities when a fellow employee was involved in a serious accident and will be out of the office indefinitely.
  • Kay Lucas, NNICU: A visitor who brought her fourth-grade church class to the NNICU with gifts of quilts for the babies applauded Lucas for staying after her shift to answer all of the children's questions with humor and patience. 
  • Karri Malvasio, Patient Care Assistant, 6 East: A patient applauded Malvasio for bringing her clothes, and doing her hair and nails for her after work  The patient said Malvasio was a special caregiver, because she saw her do this for other patients, as well.
