Patient contact valuable experience for dietetic interns

Dietetic intern, Carrie Weiglein, MS (center) participates in the nutrition therapy provided by Betsy Johnson, MS, RD, for Tim Burke, a patient in MUSC’s IDEAL Clinic.

Participating in the multi-disciplinary IDEAL team helps prepare proficient, entry-level dietitians - a goal of MUSC’s dietetic internship. During their four weeks in MUSC’s Ambulatory Clinics, interns assess patients’ nutrient needs, provide nutrition education, develop menus with patients and evaluate outcomes of nutrition therapy.

The interns interact with patients having conditions from high-risk pregnancy to cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

MUSC’s Department of Medicine sponsors the experienced-based internship to prepare dietetic students for the registration exam and for entry-level dietetic practice.
