Rehabilitation Unit wins accreditation

MUSC's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services unit has been awarded renewed accreditation status for the next three years through the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

“This award helps to validate our presence and demonstrate that we meet the state's standards for quality rehab care,” said Nancy Davidson, RN, MSN, nurse manager, Department of Therapeutic Services.

Founded in 1953 the rehab unit is located on the second floor of MUSC Hospital. CARF also recognized the department's pain rehabilitation programs which feature acute pain and persistent pain programs. Previously, MUSC's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services was the area's first rehabilitation program accredited by CARF. The CARF/MUSC survey report praised a dedicated, committed and qualified staff. “The leadership and staff members are dedicated, committed and qualified to meet the needs of individuals served. The unit's programs are well organized, comprehensive and serve as a model for the state.”

In a letter of congratulations, former South Carolina governor David M. Beasley praised MUSC's rehab unit's team efforts for “ensuring the provision of high-quality, cost-efficient care for individuals and families served by MUSC's programs.” CARF is a private, non-profit organization which establishes standards for quality, recognizes and promotes organizations which provide services to people with disabilities.

CARF's standards are developed by nationwide rehabilitation professionals and input from consumers. The accreditation will extend through August 2001.
