Sorority involving hair care centers in educating public

The South Carolina Nurses Association awarded a grant to the SC Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. for its project called “Fostering Healthy Community at Hair Care Centers or Project HCC2 Subscript.”

According to Brenda Gumm Carey, “this was the best way to get the health care information into the community, by taking pamphlets into local hair care centers where people most likely will visit on a monthly basis.”

Each month pamphlets will change subject matter featuring issues such as glaucoma and heart disease.

This project will reach across South Carolina with the help of four chapters serving as primary satellites participating with nursing sororities, including undergraduate chapters in three South Carolina universities.

“If we can reach one person that may not have been diagnosed, then this project will be a success,” said Carey.

The list of Charleston/Berkeley county salons and barber shops contributing their business for the success of this project are: 1st Class Q’s, North Charleston; Susie’s Hair Mart, Charleston; Abracadabra, Goose Creek; Carolina Beauty, Charleston; Ebony Hair, Charleston; Praises Beauty Shop, West Ashley; Hair Mart, North Charleston; Alm’s Shop, McClellanville; Jerri’s Beauty Shop, Charleston; Barbara Jackson, Charleston; Swint’s Barber Shop,Union Heights.
