Emergency call boxes recently installed

by Cpl. Mike Anderson, Public Safety

There are 53 emergency call boxes located around the MUSC campus.

Each of these call boxes provides a direct radio link to the Department of Public Safety.

Once activated, the location of the call box will be broadcast over the radio as well as through a computer monitor located in the Public Safety dispatch office. Immediately after the activation, a dispatcher will ask the person at the box if they have an emergency and will dispatch Public Safety Officers to respond to the area accordingly.

If the dispatcher does not get an answer, a Public Safety officer will be dispatched to investigate.

The emergency call boxes are orange in color and are equipped with a blue light. To activate the box, simply push the red button located toward the bottom of the box and release. To talk to the dispatcher through the box, press the button to talk and release to listen. In the event that a call box is disabled, a red "out of order" sign will be placed on the box and repairs will be made as soon as possible.

The Department of Public Safety recommends that each student and employee familiarize themselves with the 53 emergency call boxes located throughout the MUSC campus. They are located in the area in which you park your car (with the exception of Hagood Lot which has a Public Safety officer) and along the route in which you walk back and forth to your car.

More information about the emergency call boxes and other services offered by Public Safety can be obtained by visiting the MUSC Department of Public Safety web page at <http://www.musc.edu/publicsafety>
