After-hours parking for employees, students

Safe, convenient, affordable after-hours parking for employees and students will soon require registration with the Office of Parking Management. But relax, the cost is minimal.

From Feb. 14 through March 13, employees and students working on campus who need parking services from 4:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. weekdays and 24 hours on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays should register with the office on the second floor of the garage.

A registration fee of $5 per year and a $10 deposit for an access card will be charged. Employees will receive an after-hours hangtag when they register.

Beginning March 13, the access card will be required to enter and exit the garage, and it will be necessary to display the after-hour hangtag. The access card will allow after-hours parkers to enter and exit the garage without assistance from the attendant and without presenting their employee ID as they do now. Card holders will also be able to use the secured stairwells and elevators.

“Also, we need to know who uses the program,” said Parking Management director Melinda Anderson. “We need the information a registration data base will provide to communicate with our parkers from time to time, to assess current programs and to plan for the future.”

The employee parking garage is staffed 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, by a parking attendant, and a Public Safety officer is on site at various periods of the day and night. Additional coverage is provided by regular police ride-throughs. Passive security features include a CCTV system, good lighting, card access to stairwells and elevators, and controlled vehicle and pedestrian pathways during off-hours. Once the after-hours users are registered, all entrance and exit gates will be controlled at all times.

Questions about the After-Hours Parking Program can be answered by a brochure issued by the Office of Parking Management. The brochure and further information about the program can be obtained at the office or by calling 792-3665.
