Employees receive AREA awards for job well done

AREA (Accountability, Respect, Excellence Applause) awards were given to employees who have gone above and beyond their job description and have demonstrated actions exemplary to the mission, visions and values of the Medical Center and Medical University.

Employees received a $50 gift certificate to either Citadel or Northwoods mall. The AREA award recipients are:

  • Edward Bray, Safety and Security: Bray responded to a screaming person who was asking for assistance for a baby locked in a car. After notifying Public Safety, Bray went to the vehicle and noticed an infant in a car seat sweating profusely and screaming. Outside the car was another child approximately 6 years old. He relayed the information to the dispatcher and assisted in removing the child from the car and transporting them to Charleston Memorial Hospital.
  • Melody Fogle, Fast Flow and Satellite Labs: Fogle was quick to respond to a woman in the cafeteria who was choking on some food.
  • Shirley Carter, Accounts Payable: Carter immediately reimbursed an employee that had a crisis and was in urgent need of a travel refund. She expedited the process for reimbursement so quickly that the employee was able to alleviate the crisis.
  • Sue Coates, Office of Enrollment Services: Coates willingly took over the work loaded of a coworker who had to go on an extended sick leave. She is always willing to do more than what is needed.
  • Wendy Dingle, College of Medicine—Dean's Office: When a disoriented elderly patient came in lost, Dingle not only called to find the location of his appointment, she left the reception desk and escorted him to his appointment.
  • Tim Hushion, Pediatrics: Hushion assisted with a child who came into the Children's Hospital with a broken arm by holding his arm up while he was transported to the emergency room.
  • Catherine Young, Hollings Cancer Center: Young gave cassettes of children's movies that her daughter had outgrown to the Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology Clinic for the HCC movie collection. These movies will provide enterainment for children during their appontment sessions.
