Children and Healthcare Week: calendar of events

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. signs the official proclamation declaring March 14-20 "Children and Healthcare Week," as Kristin Moore, chief pediatrics resident, and Chris Darnell look on.

March 14 to 20

Book Display Charleston County Library Main Branch. Display of books related to children's health care and the promotion of good health.

Elevator Board Contest Children's Hospital units will decorate Children's Hospital elevator boards to represent the theme of Children and Healthcare Week, “Partners for Pediatric Pain Management.” The winner will receive a pizza party from Norm's Pizza and Subs.

Get Well Card from J.K. Gourdin Elementary A hand-crafted giant get well card for Children's Hospital patients, from first graders at J.K. Gourdin Elementary, will be displayed in the Atrium.

Monday, March 15

Parent Coffee Hour 8 to 10 a.m. Children's Health will offer refreshments on Children's Health units and in Rutledge Tower Pediatric Clinic waiting areas to acknowledge and support the efforts of our patients families.

Tuesday, March 16

Patient Perspectives All day Patients can illustrate and/or write about their care at MUSC on graffiti walls in Rutledge Tower Pediatric Clinics waiting areas and the Atrium. The "walls" will be displayed at the Employee Reception on Friday, March 19.

Happy Halls Art Contest Award Ceremony 6 to 9 p.m. This ceremony honors the more than 400 children from 32 local elementary, middle and high schools whose artwork was selected in the fifth annual Happy Halls Art Contest to be showcased throughout the pediatric services areas at MUSC. The ceremony will be held in Baruch Auditorium with receptions following in Children's Hospital Main Lobby, Rutledge Tower Pediatric Clinic Waiting areas and Pediatric Department at Charleston Memorial Hospital.

Mind Your Health—"Family Strategies for Living with a Child with ADHD" 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dr. Jim Edwards with IOP Youth Services will discuss ADHD and family skills that can help relieve stress. Call 792-1414 to register

Wednesday, March 17

MUSC Cookin' Kids 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Children's Hospital Lobby Maggie and Shawn, hosts of the new MUSC Cookin' Kids TV Show will be on hand to sign copies of the I Love to Cook Book.

Thursday, March 18

"Helping Children Tell Their Story" – Luncheon 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. 11:30 a.m. —204 Lab Medicine 1:30 p.m. —687 Children's Hospital Sue Heiney, Ph.D., will discuss ways to help children express their feelings and how to use “story” as a therapeutic tool. Sponsored by Astra.

Trident Area SAFE KIDS Booth 2 to 4 p.m. Rutledge Tower Main Lobby SAFE KIDS will offer information on safety and injury prevention.

March TLC program—"Discipline and Healthy Reinforcement" 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wando High School, 1560 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant Discipline and positive reinforcement are essential throughout childhood development. Join MUSC's Meredith Lyons-Crews, MSW, and Patricia Yandle, Principal, Moultrie Middle School, as they offer suggestions for proper discipline techniques that work both at home and school. MUSC Children's Health Annual Reception 2 to 4 p.m. Room 841 Children's Hospital Celebration recognizing all employees committed to improving the quality of care for our children and their families.
