MUSC docs named among top lung cancer specialists

Three MUSC physicians were named among the 318 Top Cancer Specialists for Women in the March issue of Good Housekeeping magazine.

They are: Andrew T. Turrisi III, M.D., (professor and chairman of radiation oncology); Carolyn R. Reed, M.D., (professor of surgery and associate director for clinical affairs, Hollings Cancer Center); and Mark R. Green, M.D., (director of the Hollings Cancer Center; chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology; and professor of medicine).

Turrisi was listed as a top radiation oncologist specializing in lung cancer; Reed as a top lung cancer surgeon; and Green as a top medical oncologist specializing in lung cancer. The physicians on the Good Housekeeping list were nominated by 280 department chairs and section chiefs in surgical, medical, and radiation oncology at major medical centers across the country.

They were asked “In your opinion, which doctors provide the most expert treatment and are the leading clinicians for lung, breast and colon cancer in women?” To eliminate bias, the physicians were not allowed to recommend any specialists from their own institutions.

From the 1,200 doctors named, the magazine culled the 318 cited most often.
