Students honored at volunteer luncheon

1999 MUSC Gives Back Community Volunteer Awards is honoring seven student volunteer organizations for their work around the Tri-county community.

Six categories are recognized for volunteer support and categorized by their interest. They are: children, women, general community, indigent/low income, senior services and people with disabilities.

“Each year I look forward to receiving applications,” said Liz Sheridan, director of MUSC Gives Back. “I’m always surprised and impressed by student organizations and their level of volunteering within the community.”

The 1999 MUSC Gives Back Community Volunteer Awards are: College of Health Professions, Student Occupational Therapy Association, Class of 2001 Members participated in the Charleston County Special Olympics.

At opening Ceremonies, volunteers held signs for each district, ushered and supported athletes. Volunteers organized a craft booth, parachute games and supported the basketball competition.

Twenty-eight members took time out of spring break to participate, and was one of the few groups to provide such a large number of volunteers. The group provided more than 200 hours to Special Olympics during the two-day event.

College of Nursing The Class of 1999 founded Angels for Elders to help residents at the Hermina Traeye Nursing Home on Johns Island. Volunteers contacted local businesses, companies, friends and family members for donations of personal care products that Medicare does not reimburse. Two donation drives have resulted in more than 300 gifts bags filled with items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, Kleenex and deodorant. In addition, Hermina Nursing Home received many hours of quality visiting time.

College of Medicine, American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) Volunteers associated with the (AMWA) have continued work with organizations such as People Against Rape, Happy Days and Special Times, and Florence Crittendon Home. They contributed time to MUSC Children’s Hospital, for patients and siblings.

College of Pharmacy, Class of 2000 Students raised funds to give Thanksgiving and Christmas to victims of domestic violence at My Sister’s House. Also, they adopted a family of three through the Department of Social Services to have Christmas dinner and gifts.

College of Graduate Studies, Graduate Student Association This year, members of the Graduate Student Association worked in various areas of volunteerism. They created display boards for MUSC Student Research Day and attending Special Olympics. They also awarded prizes instead of candy at the Halloween Carnival for Diabetic Children.

College of Dental Medicine, Psi Omega Dental Fraternity Adding to their continuing work at Charleston Heights Dental Clinic, Psi Omega sponsored a cookout for children at Jenkins Orphanage. Approximately 30 children received toiletries, school supplies, bathrobes, slippers and gift certificates collected by members.

MUSC Student Government Association, Universitywide Members of the Student Government Association found time to assist several functions including a Halloween party for Jenkins Orphanage.

Supplies were collected for United Methodist Relief Center and the homeless in North Charleston, while providing festive events and serving as role models for the children at Carolina Youth Developement Center.
