Annual charity ball tops fundraising goal

The 12th Annual Charity Ball raised a record $19,505—topping its goal by $1,800. The funds will be distributed to four Lowcountry organizations, Crisis Ministries, Trident Literacy Association, People Against Rape, and The Windwood Farm Home for Children.

The College of Medicine Student Council sold 575 tickets, while Medical Student Alumni Council provided items for a silent auction. Among the 295 businesses in the Charleston area that provided generous donations, the top four were Advanced Cellular, Pack Rat Self Storage, NationsBank and Arthur Murray Dance.

“All the donations were very much appreciated not only by those that hosted the ball, but also the recipients of the charity,” said Bruce Easterling, co-chair of the council. “Their contributions helped make the ball a tremendous success this year.”

Other interesting articles auctioned were the services of Layton McCurdy, M.D., dean, College of Medicine, as a bartender for hire, and a harpsichord concert by Victor Del Bene, M.D., associate dean, College of Medicine.

Ely Brooks, M.D., alumni president, used his creative talents to donate a nest of tables that he created out of cherrywood. While first-year medical student Luke Bonnett, offered “one Saturday of yard work” to the highest bidder.

“We go into medical school with high aspirations to help others throughout our career,” said Ashley Mullinax, council co-chair. “The Charity Ball is just one way for us to do this and have a little fun as well.”
