Bill Cosby to address 1999 MUSC graduates

The 170th commencement ceremony of MUSC will be held Friday, May 21 on the horseshoe of the Medical University campus. More than 600 students are expected to participate.

The commencement speaker will be entertainer Bill Cosby.

Scheduled to receive honorary degrees are Cosby; Marion P. Carnell, member of the S.C. House of Representatives serving District 14; Dr. James B. Edwards, MUSC president; Dr. Fredrick W. Kinard, retired dean of the Medical University College of Graduate Studies; Jin-Emon Konishi, president of Nippon Zoki Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.; Dr. Elijah Saunders, head of the Division of Hypertension, University of Maryland School of Medicine, and McKinley Washington Jr., member of the South Carolina Senate, representing District 45.

Cosby, in addition to his renown in the entertainment industry, is well known for his commitment to education, believing that the best assurance for a satisfying and rewarding life begins with knowledge.

He went back to college, long after he had achieved much of his success to obtain a master's degree as well as an Ed.D. He has been a crusader throughout his career for a better world and for better understanding among people.

Besides his involvement with a host of charity organizations, Cosby is an active trustee of his alma mater, Temple University of Philadelphia.

As philanthropists, Cosby and his wife Camille, have made substantial gifts in support of education and to various social service and civil rights organizations.
