Compliance lecture slated for Wednesday, April 19

One of the challenges facing all physicians these days is keeping up with the government’s regulations regarding documentation for Evaluation and Management services.

Understanding how to correctly select a billing code for an office visit and documenting to meet government regulations is a topic that can no longer be avoided. It is a skill set necessary for any provider who wants be paid appropriately for the services he provides.

Tray Dunaway, M.D., a practicing general surgeon from Camden, S.C., has created a system which helps physicians get to the essential documentation quickly. His risk-based coding method will assist physicians in determining the correct level of service and then understanding what needs to be documented in order to bill for that level. With this method, physicians document for the level of service performed and any unnecessary documentation is eliminated. Dunaway’s method has proved successful. His coding guide has been sold in 48 states and is now published by Matthew Medical Books.

Dunaway is being sponsored jointly by the Compliance Department and the Reimbursement Department of University Medical Associates for a presentation that is open to all physicians in the Charleston area at 6:30 p.m. on April 19 in the Institute of Psychiatry Auditorium.

These sessions are being offered free to all MUSC attendings and residents. Physicians from the community are asked to pay a $50 registration fee. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served.

All attendees will receive a copy of Dunaway’s book and Continuing Education Credits will be available. There will be an abbreviated session for MUSC attendings and residents on April 19 from 7 to 7:45 a.m. in 2 West Amphitheater.
