Abbott Fellowship awarded to DesChamps

Sean DesChamps has been named a recipient of the 1999 Abbott Laboratories Fellowship Award.

DesChamps is one of 11 scholarship recipients presented with this award since its inception in 1990.

The award provides $5,000 annually to second-year graduate students who are pursuing a career in hospital administration.

The fellowships are administered by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) on a rotating basis to university-member graduate programs throughout North America.

It's an honor to receive this award,” said DesChamps, a rising second-year student in the Department of Health Administration. “It's a credit to our program and how it compares to others out there.”

Originally from Pinewood, DesChamps began his undergraduate education at Clemson and completed his studies in business and science at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.

DesChamps was attracted to health care while working with his uncle, a practicing physician in Chattanooga, Tenn. His mother and several aunts are nurses; which also helped reinforce his interest in health care.

A member of the Association of Black Health Care Professionals, DesChamps hopes to assist in the program's recruiting efforts to help increase minority enrollment.

“This award was designed to focus on an individual's characteristics as a leader in the area of health services,” said Thomas McIlwain, Ph.D., director for the Department of Health Administration. “Sean has all those qualities and more. The sky's the limit for him.”

Abbott Laboratories has been a long-time producer of health care products and services supporting the chemical and agriculture, hospital, diagnostic, pharmaceutical and nutritional industries.
