Shields wins research award

Spartanberg native Donald Shields has been named the 1999 recipient of the American Society for Neurochemistry's Marian Kies Award. Shields has completed his fourth year in MUSC's Medical Scientist in Training Program.

The award is presented annually to an outstanding young scientist in the field of neurochemistry. Kies was a world-reknown researcher with the National Institutes of Health.

Shields' research demonstrated the active role of an enzyme, calpain, in related diseases. His biochemistry results have opened new areas of research investigation. In addition, these studies have been published in various national review articles, chapters and publications including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Brain Research and Experimental Eye Research.

A graduate of Wofford College in 1993, Shields has completed his research and doctorate in molecular biology, working under Narendra L. Banik, Ph.D., in the Department of Neurology. He is currently working his clinical rotations in the College of Medicine.
