Environmental studies for teachers

A two-week institute to provide instruction to middle and high school teachers from South Carolina and Georgia on how to develop environmental education curriculum for their classrooms is scheduled for July 12 through 23.

Teachers participating in the second annual Teachers' Environmental Education Institute will attend sessions led by environmental experts from government agencies, universities and community organizations and will be provided with information essential to developing creative and viable environmental curriculum.

Along with classroom instruction, teachers will perform hands-on activities and take field trips in the Charleston area to experience fun and fascinating ways to teach children about their relationship with the natural world.

The institute is sponsored by MUSC's Environmental Biosciences Program, South Carolina State University and Environmental Protection Agency, Region IV.

Local organizations represented as presenters include: SC Coastal Conservation League, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, Mount Pleasant Waterworks, Clemson Extension, Westvaco Corporation, SC Forestry Commission, Department of Natural Resources, Charleston Lead Program, Community-Based Environmental Protection Project and the City of Charleston.
