Pediatric Primary Care walls come to life

by Donna Bailey, Public Relations

Visiting the doctor can be a frightening experience for a sick child. At Pediatric Primary Care (PPC) in the Wachovia Bank building, a young man is working to change that.

Jabez Duncan is 18 years old. It is with his vision that PPC is being transformed with familiar characters like Disney’s Pocahontas, Lion King and Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster.

Duncan shows up once or twice a day to make his magic. He got his ideas from assorted children books, drew them out free hand in pencil and now is adding the paint. “The walls were bare, and they needed something that would comfort the children when they came through,” said Duncan. “So I volunteered.”

Duncan has been painting and drawing since he was a child and someday plans to go to art school.

Linda Monroe, LPN at Holdings Cancer Center, met Gibbets about four months ago. “He is a typical 18 year old not sure about his future. Drawing is a place to channel his energy and open up.”

“When we asked him what he could do with these walls, his eyes lit up,” said Monroe. “Through art he has transformed, and learned to laugh and enjoy life.”

Scott Kinney, lead patient registration representative in PPC, knows that people have been enjoying the art work. “Jabez is very talented and doing a wonderful job,” he said. “It’s encouraging to me that a young person is taking the time to volunteer and make a difference.”
