Team up to support Race for the Cure

MUSC departments, divisions, students and other groups are encouraged to show their support for the Charleston Komen Race for the Cure and the fight against breast cancer by participating as a team (both runners and walkers) with five or more people.

The Co-Ed 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk will be held on Saturday Oct. 16. Both events will start and finish at the Old Museum Ruins in Cannon Park.

Each year, 75 percent of proceeds from the Charleston race are allocated to organizations throughout the lower half of South Carolina funding vital breast cancer research, screening education and treatment projects.

The remaining 25 percent helps fund the Komen Foundation's National Grant Program. Since 1994, the Charleston Komen Race for the Cure has returned $320,000 to our community.

Team registration is available by mail only, and entries must be received by 5 p.m. Sept. 24. Team member registration fee is $15 per person.

Each team member must fill out a race entry form, and the team captain must mail all registration forms together. Race packets will be delivered directly to each team captain.

Team members are encouraged to publicize their school, group or corporate logo. There will be a team tent where teammates can gather on race day, and the largest three teams will be recognized.

Race runners and walkers can also participate in Friends for the Cure and collect donations from family members, friends, co-workers, or classmates in support of the race. Team members are eligible for awards based on individual donations collected.
The top fundraiser will receive two round- trip tickets courtesy of American Airlines to anywhere withing the 48 contiguous states.

For more information about the race or signing up as a team, call the Race Hotline at 792-9186.
