Make tracks with heart walk

MUSC employees will join other company teams throughout the Lowcountry to walk all over heart disease and stroke during the 1999 Lowcountry American Heart Walk.

The walk starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 outside the Customs House in downtown Charleston. MUSC faculty, staff and friends and family members of all ages may join in the 3.1 mile walk as members of MUSC's walking teams.

Heart health-related screenings will also be provided at the event's Heart Walk Expo (8 a.m. to noon) presented by the MUSC Heart and Vascular Center.

“We're geared up for this event,” said Kathy Stinson of University Medical Associates and walk company leader. “Heart disease is America's number one killer, and stroke is the leading cause of disability. We're eager to support the research work of the American Heart Association.”

Participating employees are not just walking for their health—they're raising desperately need funds to support American Heart Association research, education and community programs. Each walker who raises $100 or more will earn an American Heart Walk T-shirt and other great thank-you prizes.

During 1997, more than 13,650 South Carolinians died of cardiovascular disease or stroke. Approximately 40 percent of all deaths in South Carolina are due to these diseases.

During the event heart disease, stroke and heart surgery survivors will be honored with special red caps to show they're fighting back against these deadly diseases.
