S.C. AHEC, AMSA, MUSC team up for Primary Care Week

 MUSC will celebrate National Primary Care Week (NPCW): “Caring for Communities” Oct. 30 through Nov. 3. 

This initiative serves as an effort to highlight the importance of primary care and to bring health care professionals together to discuss and learn about community-based, primary health care. 

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) at MUSC and South Carolina AHEC work together as partners in this endeavor aimed at increasing awareness and enthusiasm about primary care for interdisciplinary health professions student.

David R. Garr, M.D., associate dean for primary care and a member of the South Carolina AHEC Council will lead MUSC's effort. Other planning committee members include representatives from AMSA, MUSC faculty and South Carolina AHEC.

Presentation topics during the week will include:
Tuesday, Oct. 31:  Universal Health Care Debate: How Would Such a Plan Affect Our Health Care System?
Noon - 1 p.m. Presentation in the Basic Science Building 

Wednesday, Nov. 1:   Health Care and the Uninsured and Underinsured. Mark Lyles, M.D., assistant dean for Clinical Operations, MUSC College of Medicine
Noon - 1 p.m. Presentation in the Basic Science Building 

Thursday, Nov. 2: Role of Primary Care Physicians in Underserved Areas: Locally and Internationally. Stoney Abercrombie, M.D., South Carolina AHEC executive director
Noon - 1 p.m.  Lunch and Presentation in the Basic Science Building, sponsored by South Carolina AHEC
