Hypertension Initiative on a roll to control blood pressure

NFL superstar and ESPN commentator Sterling Sharpe will appear on billboards, television and radio stations across the state beginning in October in support of the Hypertension Initiative of South Carolina.

NFL and ESPN star, Sterling Sharpe, appears on billboards promoting better blood pressure control.

Sharpe's public service announcements are designed to focus attention on better blood pressure control—emphasizing the need to keep blood pressure below 140/90.

The Hypertension Initiative, a component of the MUSC Cardiovascular Institute for Research and Prevention, aims to help move South Carolina from a leader in cardiovascular disease to a model of cardiovascular health.

Since it began in March, the initiative has received significant support from the federal Agency for Healthcare Research Quality and state Department of Health and Environmental Control sources. Unrestricted educational grants from Solvay and AstraZeneca will support the first of the Experts in Hypertension Seminar Series to be held Nov. 4 in Columbia and Nov. 18 in Beaufort.

The initiative recently received designation as a Consortium of Southeastern Hypertension Control Center of Excellence together with its community partner, Low Country Internal Medicine in Beaufort under the direction of William Bestermann, M.D.
