Carnival caters to children with diabetes

More than 16 million people in the United States live with diabetes. It has been estimated that every three minutes someone dies from complications associated with diabetes, according to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

For the third consecutive year, the American Medical Student Association and the MUSC Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic held its annual Diabetic Halloween Carnival for Children on Oct. 26.

MUSC College of Health Professions-Physical Therapy Class of 2001 students join in on the fun during the annual Diabetic Halloween Carnival for Children held Oct. 26.

The carnival caters to the needs of diabetic children in the Charleston community and provides them with an opportunity to experience Halloween in a safe and special environment.

This year, more than 100 children participated in the carnival which featured clowns, an air castle and a dunking booth. Students from the College of Health Professions-Physical Therapy, College of Nursing, College of Graduate Studies, College of Health Professions-Physician Assistant Program and the College of Medicine joined in the fun and games by providing the booths and games. Other volunteers from various groups were also on hand to contribute to the carnival's success.

The mission of the American Medical Student Association is to provide enrichment to the lives of medical students and to promote concern for the needs of the community.
