Employee Health managed by CON

MUSC Employee Health Service opened July 1 as an academic based nurse managed center by the College of Nursing.

This model of care allows clients direct access to professional nursing services and operates with an advanced practice nurse in a chief management position. In addition, this innovative health care delivery system provides opportunities for faculty and student clinical practice in occupational safety and health. Prevention of occupational and environmental illness is a major goal of the practice.

As a nurse managed clinic, the scope of services are under the direction of a nurse practitioner. Physician consultation is available by telephone and direct examination is done on a periodic basis. Nurse practitioner students and medical students participate in various learning opportunities.

Health care services also include blood borne pathogen exposures and surveillance monitoring, work related injuries/illnesses and occupational exposures.

Employee Health Services collaborates with University Risk Management and the Medical University Hospital Authority to ensure proper management of occupational medicine. Quarterly reviews are conducted to discuss occupational health.

During the recent transitional period, the College of Nursing met expectations at the first quarterly review of services and have received many additional positive comments and thank yous from consumers.

“We are confident the decision to support an academic-based nurse managed center will be rewarded with additional future achievements,” said family  nurse practitioner Cindy Allen. Expanding services to incorporate common episodic illnesses, preventative health maintenance and research opportunities are but some of the ideas that could be incorporated by this model clinic.
