Autumn Gala raises money for charities, scholarships

The MUSC Association of Black Health Professionals raised $5,000 for two area charities and its scholarship fund through the Autumn Gala, also know as TAG, held Sept. 30.

Erin Cohen, left, and Ida Spruill, right, received the donations from newly elected ABHP President Stacey Harris.

The South Carolina Chapter of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and MUSC's Project SUGAR each received $2,000. The remaining $1,000 will fund ABHP scholarships.

“This $2,000 gift is the most significant gift we have ever received from a student service organization,” said Pat Goodwin of the American Diabetes Association. “Working with the TAG team was a rewarding and uplifting experience...Seeing all of their efforts come together and culminating in such a successful conclusion was heartening.”

The ADA donation will support America's Walk for Diabetes, scheduled to take place at Hampton Park Saturday, Nov. 11. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. and the 2-mile walk begins at 2:30 p.m.

On hand at the Autumn Gala to accept the gift was Erin Cohen, ADA volunteer and recent graduate from the College of Pharmacy.

The $2,000 donation to Project SUGAR will offset monitoring strip expenses for diabetic patients and be used to help purchase supplies so the group can continue performing free community screenings, according to Ida Spruill of Project SUGAR.

“I am extremely proud of the effort that was given by members of the ABHP,” said Anthony Walker, gala coordinator. “I am also delighted that we had the support of the students, faculty and staff of the College of Health Professions. We worked very hard to get this project off the ground and we are pleased with its success. Next year we look forward to raising more money and having an even larger turnout.”
