Breast cancer foundation nets $315,000 

More than 5,000 runners and walkers joined in the fight against breast cancer in the seventh annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Charleston Race for the Cure held Saturday, Oct. 28 at Cannon Park. 

Many participants wore pink signs dedicating their participation to a loved one affected by breast cancer.

The event raised $315,000—75 percent of which will stay in the Lowcountry funding breast cancer research, screening, education and treatment programs, particularly for the medically underserved. The remaining 25 percent will help fund the Komen Foundation’s National Grant Program. 

Overall male winner, Miguel Gonzales crosses the finish line with a time of 15:48.

Overall male winner in the 5K race was 29-year-old Miguel Gonzales with a time of  15:48. Overall female winner was 36-year-old Nancy Brennan with a time of 18:59. Overall breast cancer survivor winner was Bev Veals, age 36, with a time of 20:27. Individual race results are available at <http://www.charlestonrace4cure.org>.

Many race participants were part of a team, and the largest three school and community teams were recognized. Community team winners were: first place, Giving It Up Makes The Difference, from Andrews, S.C. (192 members); second place, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center (92 members); and third place, CareAlliance Roper Cancer Center (90 members). School team winners were: first place, Porter-Gaud School (224 members); second place, Archibald Rutledge Academy (150 members); and third place, Ashley Hall School (144 members).

More than 600 breast cancer survivors, all wearing bright pink survivor hats, were recognized during the event. Many runners and walkers dedicated their effort to a loved one who battled breast cancer by wearing pink signs with “In memory of...” or “In celebration of... .”
