Burn Center staff dedicated employees

by Janet Verhagen, RN
Burn Center
While multidisciplinary teamwork is a relatively new concept to many units, it has been in place for years in burn centers across the continent.

The Burn Center at MUSC is a dedicated, specialized group of people devoted to burn care. The burn team incorporates registered nurses, burn technicians, physicians, dietitians, pharmacists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, continuum care managers, secretaries and a psychiatric liaison nurse in the collaborative care of burn patients.

Following the passing of Dr. Dabney Yarborough, David Barillo, M.D., joined the team as medical director for Burn and Plastic Surgery. Shortly thereafter, Garry Killyon, M.D.,  joined the team as attending physician for the Burn Center.

Members of the Burn Center are involved in various concepts of burn care. As part of ongoing efforts to provide current standards of care in practice, policies and procedures are being created and revised specific to the Burn Center. Nurses, physicians, dietary and pharmacy are all directly involved in the policy decisions related to their specialty. Team efforts are coordinated by multidisciplinary rounds in the Burn Center which are held on a weekly basis.

The Burn Center at MUSC is the designated Center for Burn Care of South Carolina and surrounding areas. In order to ensure consistent practices related to infection control and to promote the Burn Center identity, the team was recently outfitted with new scrubs and logo provided by donated funds from the firefighters of North Carolina and South Carolina.

Currently, the burn team is working towards American Burn Association verification.

Barillo and Mary Anne Healy, nurse manager for the Burn Center, are facilitating team efforts in updating policies and procedures for the Burn Center as well as ensuring 100 percent Advanced Burn Life Support recognition of all professional staff.
