Dietetic Internship receives initial accreditation

During its April meeting the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic Association voted to grant initial accreditation to MUSC’s Dietetic Internship. The accreditation is for a 10-year period.

To address the shortage of nutrition professionals in South Carolina as well as a shortage of experiential programs for dietetic students in the United States, development of the internship began in 1992. MUSC is South Carolina’s health center that can offer the best quality and greatest variety of clinical experiences for training dietitians. The Charleston area provides resources for a varied and challenging community curriculum as well.

The accreditation site visitors said of the program “it is a strong program especially for being a very new program.” All graduates have passed their national registration examination as first time test takers. Each year the program has filled its class with preferred applicants. Joanne Milkereit is director of the program which is sponsored by the Department of Medicine.
