MUSC's 10East sowing seeds of hope

by Sylvia Crews, RN, 10East
Survivor Chair for Relay for Life Mount Pleasant, Charleston

The Relay of Life team on 10East was busy Friday night, May 12, sowing seeds of hope for a bright cancer free future for our community.

Our relay team this year has raised more than $9,075 from bake sales, candy, teddy bears, luminaries, and donations.

The team consisted of Kerry Frank, team captain; Julia Smith, treasurer; Lila Williams, treasurer; coworkers Tess Morris, Darlene Fludd, Barbie McKinnon, Linda Howie, Julie Ayers, Norma Scott, Lynne Malden, Gail Heitman, Lara Moody, Liz Orlando and myself.

Our theme was “The Garden of Hope” which was decorated to resemble a beautiful Charlestonian garden with Ragedy Ann and Andy enjoying late afternoon tea amidst the many beautiful plants and trees. Last year we raised almost $2,500 for the American Cancer Society. We almost reached our goal of $10,000 this year.

Special thanks to Moody and Heitman for the beautiful artwork, Sterling Hannah and Janet Jessey of Hollings Cancer Center for help in selling the relay teddy bears. Thanks to Hannah for selling ribbons for blue Jean day at Hollings for a total contribution of $155.

After the Survivors Walk, the survivors were honored with a dinner in their honor in the “Celebration Cafe” tent. The cake, decorated by Laura Aills from 8W, read “Celebrating Life in 2000.”

Relay for Life 2000 was a huge success, with 39 participants in the Survivors Walk.
