Sutusky appointed interim VP for finance

John C. Sutusky, Ph.D., MUSC director of planning, has been appointed interim vice president for finance and administration, replacing Robert C. Gallager, MBA, CPA, effective July 1.

In his interim position, Sutusky will assume immediate oversight of all general and financial operations of the university and responsibility for the physical facilities of the university. He also will serve as financial advisor to the president and the Board of Trustees and as treasurer of the university.

Gallager, who will be vice president for finance and operations at the University of North Dakota, will remain at MUSC through June 30. He was appointed to his present position in August 1994 and has held a faculty post as professor in the College of Health Professions.

“I’ve enjoyed my tenure at the Medical University,” Gallager said. “But I’m also looking forward to new challenges as I accept my new position.” He expressed confidence “that the finance and administration staff and university employees as well will give Dr. Sutusky the same high level of support they have given me over the past six years.”

Sutusky came to MUSC to serve as director of planning from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education in Columbia, where he was associate commissioner for facilities and the state post-secondary review program, a post he held for seven years.

A graduate of Saint Francis College, Loretto, Pa., Sutusky holds a B.A. in economics with a minor in commerce. He earned his M.S. in industrial relations from West Virginia University, Morgantown, and his Ph.D. in higher education administration from Florida State University, Tallahassee.

As director of planning, Sutusky has been responsible to the vice president for finance and administration to direct and support the University Facilities Planning Committee in preparation of a new master plan. He also directed and coordinated preparation of the university’s overall permanent improvement plan and annual permanent improvement plan, served as the university’s representative in facilities planning to state government, and served as a university-wide liaison for planning the expansion or modification of physical environments.

“Dr. Sutusky is well qualified for this appointment given his experience in academic administration,” said MUSC President Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D.  “He has broad support from the other leaders within the Department of Finance and Administration and he has strong relationships with key regulatory staff in Columbia.”

In announcing Sutusky’s appointment, Greenberg said that a national search for a vice president for finance and administration is under way and he expects it to be completed in the fall. Sabra Slaughter, Ph.D., executive assistant to the president, will chair the search committee and advertisements will soon appear in the major periodicals.
