Gastroenterology ranks among best in nation according to report

For the fourth straight year, US News & World Report has ranked gastroenterology at MUSC among the best in the nation.

This year, MUSC advanced from 32nd to 26th best hospital in the nation in gastroenterology. This is the sixth straight year MUSC has been included in the annual rankings of 17 specialties.

The July 17 issue, currently on newsstands, is the magazine’s 11th annual ranking of the nation’s best health care facilities.

To be considered for ranking, a hospital must be a member of either the Council of Teaching Hospitals, be affiliated with a medical school or have at least nine of the 17 specialties.

Of the 6,247 hospitals the magazine looks at each year, only 173 were rfanked in at least one of the specialties. Rankings are based on reputation, a survey of 150 specialists in each classification, death rates, and a 1998 American Hospital Association survey.
